How tall is that tree?

Find out! This activity is best done with a friend. You only need your hands and feet!

1 Choose a tree you fancy. (Do you know the species of the tree you have chosen? The notice board at the main entrance will help you.) Start from the side of the tree where there is a clear space, because you need to walk away from the tree.

2 Walk backwards away from the tree, holding a ruler/pencil or your splayed hand upright at arms length until the tree appears to be the same height as your measure.

3 Stop and turn the ruler/pencil/spayed hand sideways until it is parallel with the ground. Keep one end on what seems to be the bottom of the trunk.

4 Get your friend to walk sideways from the tree (not towards you!), until he/she is level with the end of the ruler/pencil/hand. Ask him/her to stop.

5 Now measure from your friend to the base of the real tree. This is the rough height of the tree. (Pigeon step out this distance, which will be the height. A pigeon step is toe against heel against toe against heel etc. (N.B. Men’s foot length is about 3cm longer than ladies.) Don’t lose count. Multiply! Have fun.

Also: Find in the Park No.48 Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) the world’s tallest tree which can reach a height of 4,100 size 9 and live for around 1,500 years! Try heel to toe 4,100 times across the Park!
